- Process Background Illustration -
In this assignment we were supposed to write a story and once that story is done, choose a scene from the story and make a drawing of it. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to finish writing the story for one of my main characters.
I got to writing but I was focusing too much on the little details and the bigger story instead of just the characters' part in the story.
I stopped halfway through to start over, I then made a shorter version of the story
- Story -
Name Character: Bastian/Excelerator
Part 1
Bastian is sitting in class with his friends when a heavy object gets thrown through the window and it explodes, causing Bastian to end up in a coma. He wakes up after two months, he discovers he has powers and accidentally kills some people so he runs away. After a while one of his friends finds him and they gather the others, Bastian then gets given the name Excelerator. On the news they see that the uncle of one of his friends also has powers now and the group teams up to take him down which they do, they become heroes and Bastian leaves the country to go find Infinite (the leader of the main good guys)

Bastian and his squad are tasked with tracking down someone, they succeed but their ship gets destroyed and the group has to walk to HQ now once there, they discover it has been destroyed. After tracking down the others, they all join together to take down the main bad guys again

Bastian alongside some other characters gets sent to a different universe by accident, eventually one of the other characters builds a machine to bring them back

Bastian and his friends are tasked with taking down another one of the main bad guys when they get called back to base for a code red: another planet is on a collision course with theirs

After destroying the other planet, one of the characters from that planet gets mad and ends up fighting with the good guys, meanwhile the main bad guy has been acting out on his plans and he ends up taking over the entire planet, forcing the good guys to go into hiding

6 years later Bastian is tasked with tracking down a terrorist. Although he fails, it seems that the terrorist has disappeared

4 years later the terrorist reappears and he activates a machine that slowly destroys the planet, the good guys have no way of destroying it so their only idea is sending Bastian back in time (his powers are extreme speed among other things) he does but ends up in the far future

He then meets a scientist that promises to help him by building a time machine, he does but it malfunctions causing them to end up in the year 200 million B.C. (this is an important part in the bigger story)

Bastian tries to travel through time on his own again, he succeeds and ends up in the present again. By now the others have figured out a way to destroy the machine, they do and they win for good

- Sketches -
I made a few very quick rough sketches and decided to carry on with the first one which is a fight scene between Bastian and one of the villains in a snowy forest
I then redesigned the villain and the new suit for Bastian since I hadn't designed the suit he has at this point in the story yet. After that I got to work on a sketch for the scene but pretty quickly realized that the background which was the most important part of the assignment would be pretty boring as it is just a snowy forest, it doesn't tell anything about the story whatsoever. So literally I went back to the drawing board
I then decided to draw the point in the story where Bastian has to fight his evil counterpart. So I redesigned his suit aswell and after that got to work on the full drawing
- Process Final Product -
Since the battle takes place in a city, it would be a way more interesting background
For some reason I started out with the sky and the road
I then roughly coloured everything in
Next I finished the characters
I then got to work on the background (I also made Bastian a little smaller and moved him back to fit the size of the road more)

And after adding some more details in the rubble and buildings I was done
- Reflection -
I carry a mental checklist with me at all times of what I want to become better at, for every drawing I make I try to tick as many boxes as I can. For this one those boxes were: interaction between characters, shading, different perspective, backgrounds, anatomy and lineless art. I'd say I did pretty good considering this is my second attempt at a lineless drawing. I'm happy with the end result, though if I know myself well enough I'm gonna hate it in a few months because of the improvement I would've made by then.
